Mesothelioma Cancer

What is Mesothelioma?

Mesothelioma is a cancerous disease that attacks the body’s Mesothelial cells, the outer lining that protects the body’s major organs including the heart, stomach and lungs. There are three different types of Mesothelioma. The most common type of Mesothelioma is Pleural Mesothelioma, in which the cancer affects the lungs and the protective lining around the cavity of the lungs. A more rare form of Mesothelioma is Peritoneal Mesothelioma, in which the cancer affects the stomach and abdomen. The most rare form of Mesothelioma is Pericardial Mesothelioma, in which the cancer affects the heart and the cavity that surrounds the heart.

Causes of Mesothelioma

Mesothelioma is caused by prolonged and unprotected exposure to asbestos. People who work with asbestos on a regular basis, such as factory workers, miners and engineers, are the individuals who are most at risk for getting Mesothelioma. Since it can take people who have Mesothelioma up to thirty years to show signs of symptoms, most of the people who have this disease are over 60 years old.

Symptoms of Mesothelioma

The symptoms of Mesothelioma vary greatly and can take decades to appear. Generally, the symptoms for individuals who have Pleural Mesothelioma included persistent cough, difficulty breathing, weight loss, high fever, trouble swallowing and swelling of the face and neck. People with Peritoneal Mesothelioma may experience abdominal pain and swelling, nausea, loss of appetite and vomiting. People with Pericardial Mesothelioma may experience chest pain, shortness of breath, persistent coughing and palpitations.

Mesothelioma Treatments

Today, there are many types of treatments that are used to treat Mesothelioma. One of the most effective ways to treat this cancer is by surgery. There are typically two types of surgery used to treat Mesothelioma: aggressive surgery or palliative procedures. The main purpose of aggressive surgery is to remove as much as the tumor as possible while palliative surgeries are used to relieve some of the symptoms of the cancer. Other types of treatments for Mesothelioma cancer are Chemotherapy or Radiation Therapy or Dual Therapy, which is a combination of both Chemotherapy and Radiation.
