Drug Uses
Hydrea is prescribed for certain cancers like skin cancer, myelocytic leukemia and cancer of the ovary. It also helps in the control of skin cancer of the head and neck when used with radiation.

How Taken
Hydrea should only be used as per the doctor’s direction. The drug can be taken in empty stomach as well as with food. You should have to drink lots of fluid when taking the drug. You should have to wear gloves when handling Hydrea; do not use bare hands.  

Warnings/Precautions
Before your doctor prescribes the drug, you have to inform him about all your medical conditions so that he can take an appropriate decision on the medication. Tell him if you are allergic to any food, medicine or any other substance, including the ingredients in Hydrea.

You should also inform your doctor if you have heart or kidney problems or any other health disorders.

Hydrea is not prescribed for pregnant women and those who hope to get conceived soon as the drug is found to be harmful to the unborn babe. Breast-feeding mothers should also avoid Hydrea as the drug is traced in breast milk.

As like other medicines, Hydrea also interacts with other medications. Therefore, tell your doctor about all the medications that you are taking. Hydrea should not be used if you have low white blood cell counts, severe bone marrow depression, low blood platelet levels and anaemia.

As the drug is known to lower the body’s immunity, it is better to tell your doctor about Hydrea medication if you are going for any dental treatment or any surgery. As the drug lowers the body’s ability to fight infection, it is better to avoid contact with persons who have cold, fever and any other infection. If you experience cold, fever, sore throat or rashes, immediately contact your doctor.

Hydrea is also known to reduce the number of platelets in the blood. Therefore, it is better not to bleed or get injured.  

Vaccinations with live virus vaccines (measles, oral polio and mumps) should not be taken while you are on Hydrea medication.
When your doctor prescribes Hydrea, make sure that you do not miss any appointments and lab tests. The lab tests are necessary to monitor your blood cell counts and platelet counts.

Elderly patients should have to use the drug with caution . Hydrea is not prescribed for children.

Missed Dose
Nothing to worry if a dose is missed. Take it as soon as you remember it. But if it is time for the regular dosage, just leave the missed one and continue with the scheduled dosage. Never mix two doses.

Overdose
Dark discoloration of skin, soreness, mouth sores, swelling of palms or soles of feet and scaling of the skin are some of the symptoms of over dosage. If you suspect an overdose, contact your doctor immediately.

More Information
Hydrea should not be shared with others. It should only be used by those persons for whom it has been prescribed. Always follow your doctor’s direction.
