ISOSORBIDE MONONITRATE

Drug Uses
Isosorbide Mononitrate prevents angina, which is caused by heart disease.

How Taken
Follow your doctor’s direction when taking Isosorbide Mononitrate. The drug can be taken in empty stomach and also with food. The normal dosage is twice a day, with a gap of seven hours. You should never stop the drug on your own as it can cause serious complications.

Warnings/Precautions
Tell your doctor about all your medical conditions before he prescribes the drug for you. Inform your doctor if you have any allergies to any particular substance, food or medicine.

Before the drug is prescribed, your doctor should have to know if you have any heart problems, blood problems, low blood pressure, over active thyroid, bleeding of the brain or if you have had any serious head injury recently.  

If pregnant or planning to get pregnant or breast feeding, you have to take Isosorbide Mononitrate only after discussing with your doctor about all the risks and benefits of using the drug. It is not known if the drug is excreted into breast milk. Better consult your doctor if you are breast-feeding.

Isosorbide Mononitrate also interacts with other medicines. So it is better to tell your doctor about all the medications that you are taking before he prescribes Isosorbide Mononitrate.

Alcohol should be avoided while taking Isosorbide Mononitrate. The drug should also be avoided if you are using a phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitor.

The drug is also known to interfere with certain lab tests. Therefore, before any lab test is conducted, intimate the lab technician that you are on Isosorbide Mononitrate medication.

Children are not prescribed Isosorbide Mononitrate.

Missed Dose
Take the missed dose once you remember it. But if it is time for your scheduled dosage, leave the missed one and continue with the regular dosage. Never go for a double dosage.

Overdose
Dizziness, headache, nausea, breathing problems, fever, flushing, irregular heartbeat, loss of appetite, paralysis, sweating, visual problems and vomiting are some of the symptoms of over dosage. If you suspect an overdose, consult your doctor immediately.

More Information
Isosorbide Mononitrate ay causes dizziness. It can worsen if the drug is taken along with other medicines or if you take alcohol. It is better not to drive or perform any hard task after taking the drug. Always follow your doctor’s direction while taking Isosorbide Mononitrate.
